This year's Festival is titled "KODOMO no HI:
Children's Day (こどもの日 Kodomo no hi) is a Japanese national holiday which takes place annually on May 5. The government decreed this day to be a national holiday to celebrate the happiness of all children, respect children's personalities and to express gratitude toward mothers
Families raise the carp-shaped "Koi no Bori" flags-Legends say the carp swims upstream & becomes a dragon - representing strength & endurance. (The way the flags blow in the wind looks like they are swimming). Traditionally, one flag is raised for each boy in the family.
They also display a Kintarō doll, usually riding on a large carp, and wearing a traditional Japanese Samurai helmet, called a Kabuto. Kintarō (who was a Samurai known for his strength even as a boy) and the Kabuto are symbols of a strong and healthy boy. There wil be a special Origami workshop for children to make their own "Koi no Bori" & "Kabuto" - See info below -
